European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
